Wimbledon Star Opens New Courts

Updated: Apr 12, 2019

Wimbledon underdog hero Marcus Willis came to Wollaston on Saturday April 6th to officially open our new courts.

Marcus is famous for his record upset win in the first round of 2016, which led to a crowd pleasing match on Centre Court against Roger Federer.

After a few words from our Chairman Alan Hughes and a brief interview, he cut the ribbon to mark the start of the new season on our brand new courts. He then played an exhibition set against Fin Cook (one of our Saturday morning coaches) and also a doubles set with Adam Tranter, Dave Edwards and Fin.

Later in the afternoon he was a great sport and let some of the lesser mortals of the club have a go at trying to return a Wimbledon standard serve in a fun competition, which ended in a three way tie between Adrian Hurst, Jo Miskin and Pat Bailey.

The courts were partly funded by a grant from Enovert Community Trust and Ibstock Enovert Trust and are playing really well.

The whole day went really well. We were blessed with good weather and enjoyed fabulous Greek food from Meaty Greek caterers, washed down with a nice glass of Pimm's!

The event was organised by WLTC members and many people helped to make the day a success. Thanks to all who helped make it such a great day - especially Marcus.
