Sunny Finals Day

The sun shone down on a successful Championship Finals Day on Sunday 5th September to bring the 2021 competition to an end.

Richard Ashley-Smith took his first Mens Singles title at the Prestwood Drive club, beating first time finalist Jack Hingley 6-2, 6-4 in a closely fought battle. Richard and Jack then paired up in the Mens Doubles final. However, they could not overcome last years champions with Max Hingley and Adam Tranter defending their title after a tight deciding third set.

In the ladies finals, Emily White took her 3rd singles title in a straight sets victory over first time finalist Katie Downing, Emily then teamed up with Bec Yates to take the Ladies Doubles title against Anita Shinton and Caroline Trinham. Bec has now won back to back doubles titles for the last 3 years.

The Mixed Doubles title went to Richard Banno and Amanda Deely who were playing in their first Wollaston Final. They overcame last years winners Shaun Ryder and Bec Yates 6-2, 7-6.

In the Plate Competition, both the Mens and Ladies Singles tournaments went to deciding Championship Tie Breaks. Ed Stafford took the mens title against Adrian Hurst. In the ladies tournament, Julie Blake came from behind to beat first time finalist Lillie Parker. Lillie and her mum Teresa then beat Claire Ashton and Bev Collins in the Ladies Doubles Plate. Bev and husband Pete could not overpower Jason Griffiths and Sarah Needs in the Mixed Doubles Plate. The Mens Doubles plate was won by Nick Digger and Paul Jackson.

Tournament Organiser Dave Tranter said "This was another very successful Club Championships for WLTC. We missed out on our finals day last year due to Covid, so it was great to end our 2021 championships in style. We were treated to some great competitive tennis played in wonderful Wollaston spirit. This is always one of the top days on our calendar and didn't disappoint"
