On Sunday Wollaston LTC (WLTC) hosted the club stage of the HSBC Road To Wimbledon event. This is the biggest tennis competition in Britain and is for juniors aged 14 and under. The winner and runner-up at Wollaston progress to the Staffordshire County finals in July. The winner of the County final then progresses to the National finals at Wimbledon against all the other County winners.
The afternoon saw excellent tennis and very closely fought matches over a 4 hour period. Nearly half the matches were decided on a third set championship tie-break. The final was between Harvey Parsons and Michael Scriven, with Harvey victorious. Harvey and Michael will now represent Wollaston at the Staffordshire County final.
Wollaston Junior Chairman Dave Scriven, who organised the club stage competition, said how pleased he was with the event. "This is the first time Wollaston have entered this national competition. our juniors were keen to compete and the club stage was both competitive and enjoyable. The players had a lot of family members supporting them, so it was also a very sociable event too".
Next month Wollaston will be participating in another LTA event. They will be sending doubles teams to a Team Challenge event between several local clubs.
